during the outro section...
So what if significant numbers of city traders have
an unspoken ulterior motive for doing that job?
They appear to be in it for the salary,
the docklands apartment and so on but in fact
they revolve around time spent immersed in the
act of trade itself, lost in a pinpoint link of
connectedness and they are consumed by those
moments where concentration opens into a holistic
vitality. Ascribing this motive paints an almost
Buddhist framework around the most directly
Capitalist earning method.
It all boils down to intention.

The River
Waist deep in the Thames on a Sunday morning
She kissed all her friends goodbye and she rowed away
Rain came down on Kingston, we stood silent
She will reach the sea in a couple of days
Will you keep the picture safe?
We will keep the picture safe.
I went climbing mountains high above the city
Looking at the river stretched out like a map below
All her friends were scattered to the corners
Nobody understood why she had to go
I will get my story straight:
We will keep the picture safe.
On the evening news a mother drowned her baby
As I sat there, I knew who to blame
Halfway down Embankment hope was fading
Truth is nothing will ever be the same
I will never see her again
We couldn't keep the picture safe.
Face down in the Thames on a Thursday morning
Watch the picture float away.

Tomorrow Morning
1.
Bite your lip, hold your tongue
Don't interrupt: I have begun
To sort this out, we'll have a plan
Tomorrow morning.
2.
Don't sit down, leave your coat on
We're going straight out, leave the door open
If there is doubt, we will know
Tomorrow morning.
(BRIDGE)
As he faded into old age
Conan Doyle believed in faeries
I fell in love on April fool's day
I dug a hole so deep it scared me
3.
So build a bridge, come to bed
don't make mileage from the stupid things we said
You wouldn't want to hear me beg
Tomorrow morning.
(BRIDGE)
Like an abandoned zoo in wartime
I am no high priority
If you have to shoot the animals around you
You might as well start with me...
(C)
Is this real - or fiction?
Is this my affliction?
4.
Bite your lip, hold your tongue
Don't interrupt, I have begun
We'll sort this out, we'll make a plan
Tomorrow morning.

Giraffes #1
There are 280 giraffes
on the British mainland.
Shared around between 85 zoos
and a few stuck in private collections.
They tell a story of the First Giraffe:
he learned to swim and he led them to England
he wrote down 3 rules to live by
and even now they still believe them...
Stick your neck out
Stand up taller
Don't look down now
It's ok, it's ok, we will find a way
Around the fences humans made for us
It's ok, it's ok, we will find a way
There are 280 giraffes
and like the Prophet said, they're getting organised
countdown to their own Year Zero
when the giraffes will learn to fly...
Stick your neck out
Stand up taller
Don't look down now
It's ok, it's ok, we will find a way
Around the fences humans made for us
It's ok, it's ok, we will fly away!
giraffes are all around
giraffes are floating down

Battersea Bridge Baptism
Susan where are you?
Where is the baby?
Come out of the bedroom
Or we're coming in.
Nobody will hurt you
You need to get well
It's not my decision
But we have to take him.
Someone find a towel
she's soaked to the skin
And close the front door now
She's not saying anything.
This house is a mess
This was her last chance
Someone check the cellar
We might need an ambulance.
Too early to say
If they'll ever forgive her
The baby is gone
And Susan smells of the river.

Cull
Ding dong, the witch is dead
she took a bullet to the side of her head
and she yelled something obscene as she fell down.
Well, fuck me - the war is won
and I didn't have time for a protest song,
nobody can tell who's a hero, who's a clown.
(we need a cull)
Move along, you're getting in the way:
Another fat American shouting all day
and when the food comes out we have to say grace.
A dumb foreigner sleeping in your bed
It all happened like the old man said
But I'm so scared I'm a national disgrace
And when the bad guys win the battle
And when they burn your castle to the ground
And when they steal all your money
I hope they stand on your roof and throw it down to the crowd.
(we need a cull)
The world is owned by 500 men
and everything is organised to benefit them
the rest of us scrabble around for what they throw out
So when you look at the civilian dead
and there's a price on the president's head
Don't even bother to ask what it's all about.
And when the bad guys win the battle
And when they burn your castle to the ground
And when they steal all your money
I hope they stand on your roof and throw it down to the crowd.
And when the bad guys win the battle
And when they burn your castle to the ground
And when they get the Lord Chief Justice
I hope they stand on your roof and throw him down to the crowd.
It's all gonna be the same in the end:
a moment of glory to show off to your friends
But when it's gone, the motherfucker's gone.
We all go home and we all ignore
millions and billions and trillions more
There is no end to this song:
It goes on...

7 Hearts
I was born with 7 hearts
Each one bigger than a dinosaur
But folded small inside me
The doctors said I could survive
They worked all night on my insides
And made my hearts beat tidy
But there was more bad news to come
'You can never fall in love', they said,
'You can't have feelings.
If you let someone come too close
Your 7 hearts explode
And bits of you will hit the ceiling!'
(CHORUS)
'We'll have to leave this sinful town' Mum said to me,
'We'll go out east and build a home down on the estuary
There won't be women all around
'And I won't let you let me let you drown
It's a long way down!'
So I grew up in a wooden hut
My mother died and I ate fish
Every night for 20 years.
Then yesterday a girl appeared
And when I saw her I could feel
My hearts all shifting gear
(CHORUS)
'I won't leave to save your life' She said
'I'm gonna take you home, I don't care if we both end up dead
I don't think we should rehearse
I won't leave you, I will kill you first!'
Come on, do your worst!

The Tin Man
No-one pulled your strings
No-one kicked your arss
No-one focused sunlight on you
with a magnifying glass
If you've got something to say
You can say it to the whole class
No-one is responsible for you, except you.
No-one's your boss
No-one made the rules
And even if the voices advised you
Who's the bigger fool
If you have someone legtimate to blame
Say a name, say a name
No-one is responsible for you, except you.
Every day
A little more of you
Slips away
Every day
No-one saw your hand
You held the strongest cards
But you played them like a novice
Now you're right back at the start
You can't sack the director
When you're only a bit part
No-one is responsible for you, except you.
Every day
A little more of yuo
Slips aways
Every day

Moths & Bees
I was drinking at the BBC
When someone put ketamine in my tea.
After that, I'm not sure
But I saw the moths and bees.
I can't remember what the taxi driver said
I need a doctor and an A-Z.
In a room full of nobody I ever met
Somebody's messing with my head.
It could be your last chance now
Everything will be fine
To turn away
Everything will be good
It could be your last chance now
Everything will be fine
To find a place
Everything will be good
After midnight the band came on
And I admit it: I was wrong
I thought the girl was looking at me
But she only saw the moths and bees.
I lost on points after 15 rounds
But misery is fertile ground
Look around you, can't you see?
100 000 moths and bees.
It could be your last chance now
Everything will be fine
To turn away
Everything will be good
It could be your last chance now
Everything will be fine
To find a place
Everything will be good
We'll be at your house at half past three:
Me and Toby and the moths and bees.
It could be your last chance now
Everything will be fine
To turn away
Everything will be good
It could be your last chance now
Everything will be fine
To find a place
Everything will be good
Everything will be fine
Everything will be good

Oil
Last night I was walking home from work across the bridge,
when something huge exploded underneath.
I was blinded, deafened, several seconds,
The concrete fell away beneath my feet,
I'm on my hands and knees.
A fireball rose around
A double decker bus fell off the side.
I made it to the bank, crawled past bodies on the tarmac
and then I waited like a coward for the sirens to arrive.
This kid came out of nowhere, in a wooden dinghy.
She can't have been much older than 13 - but she was strong:
she climbed up on the sinking wreckage, started pulling people free,
one by one she dragged and carried them to safety...
Then she was gone.
When I got home the news was on, they didn't mention her.
In the chaos maybe no-one even knows.
London Bridge has fallen down, world still turns around:
Down here there's nothing and the river flows.
(oil on the river where the bridge fell down)
